Two people have died after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, causing major disruption for northbound motorists during the morning commute.
The collision happened at about 1.53am near mile marker 141, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation and Virginia State Police.
All northbound lanes were closed while emergency crews worked at the scene, with traffic diverted from the motorway at Exit 140, which serves Route 630 and Courthouse Road.
Drivers caught in the queue between Exit 140 and the crash site were being turned around and directed back towards the exit, authorities said.
The closure led to significant delays along the busy route. The I-95 Express Lanes were later reopened to traffic.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by Virginia State Police.
