Vicky Krieps has revealed that she really spat on Charlie Hunnam while filming a heated scene for Netflix’s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.
Krieps, 42, plays Bridget Sullivan, the Borden family housemaid, who forms a close bond with Lizzie Borden, played by Ella Beatty. In the series, the pair eventually work together to murder Lizzie’s parents, including her father Andrew Borden, portrayed by Hunnam.
During one confrontation between their characters, Krieps was encouraged by Hunnam to commit fully to the scene. She said she was concerned about her physical strength, but the actor reassured her.
“I’m saying, ‘But I’m really strong.’ He says, ‘That’s fine,’ and he’s really strong, so he doesn’t mind,” Krieps said.
As the scene progressed, Krieps became so immersed in the performance that she spat on Hunnam after his character fell to the floor.
“The strength was not a problem, but I was so in it that I’m supposed to kill him in the fantasy. He falls to the floor, and I bent over and I spat on him,” she said.
Hunnam was reportedly taken by surprise when he got back up.
“He gets up, he’s like, ‘What? What did you just do? You just spat on me. You can’t do that,’” Krieps recalled, laughing.
She described the moment as playful, saying the pair were focused on their work while also having fun. Krieps and Hunnam had previously worked together on another season of Monster, centred on Ed Gein.
