Liverpool are in advanced talks over a new Trey Nyoni contract after the 19-year-old midfielder made a rapid rise into Andoni Iraola’s first-team plans.
Discussions with Nyoni and his representatives have been under way for several months, with growing confidence that an agreement can eventually be reached. Nothing has been formally completed, however.
The club’s determination to secure his long-term future is notable given that Nyoni already has more than three years remaining on his current deal.
Liverpool step up talks over Trey Nyoni contract
Liverpool rejected a £30 million offer from Nottingham Forest during the summer, a decision which underlined the value they place on the teenager’s potential.
Nyoni has since strengthened his case for a more prominent role. He scored his first senior Liverpool goal in the Champions League against Fenerbahce, producing a first-time volley from the edge of the box during the 3-2 defeat in Istanbul.
The midfielder has started Liverpool’s last three matches and has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season. His progress has accelerated since the club chose to keep him at Anfield despite interest from elsewhere.
Iraola praised Nyoni before the Fenerbahce match, saying: “We trust him, he’s doing very well.” The manager also urged the midfielder to continue learning and gaining experience, adding that he was “in a very good place.”
Nyoni is no longer viewed solely as an academy prospect, and Liverpool’s efforts to improve his terms reflect his growing importance to the squad.
With his development continuing at pace, the club’s decision to reject Forest’s offer and pursue a new Trey Nyoni contract could prove an important part of their long-term planning.
