Phil Foden appeared to troll Manchester United fans as he left Old Trafford after Manchester City claimed a 1-0 victory in the Manchester derby.
The City midfielder was sent off in the 23rd minute, but was still in a buoyant mood after his side secured three points with ten men. Foden held up a gesture indicating the final score towards supporters as he departed the stadium.
Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in the second half, although pundits questioned whether the striker had been offside. The goal nevertheless proved enough to give City victory.
Manchester United struggled against ten-man City
United failed to make the most of their numerical advantage after Foden’s dismissal and produced a timid display at home. City were able to see out the match and, according to the assessment in the aftermath, deserved the win.
The result will increase the pressure on Michael Carrick, with concerns already having been raised about how well he would fare this season despite his strong start as interim manager last term.
United’s qualification for the Champions League, secured after their form improved towards the end of the previous campaign, means Carrick’s side will also have more matches to manage.
For now, the defeat leaves questions over United’s tactical direction, with little evidence of a clear identity on display against their ten-man local rivals.
