Democrats have taken control of both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections, setting up a significant check on Donald Trump during the final two years of his presidency.
The result was reflected in early counts from Washington state, where Democratic-backed candidates led in most Supreme Court contests and dozens of state House races. The party also held a strong position in several closely watched local and congressional contests.
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez took an early lead in Washington’s closely fought 3rd Congressional District, a race regarded as one of the most competitive in the state. The Democrat was defending her seat in a district that has attracted national attention from both parties.
In Seattle, Nilu Jenks led the early count in the City Council District 5 contest. The results remained subject to change as further postal ballots were processed.
Voters were also considering a series of initiatives. Initiative 638, which would introduce sex-verification requirements for school sports, led in early returns, while Initiative 645 – the proposed “Millionaires Tax” – was on course to fail. Initiative 001, described as a Parents’ Bill of Rights, also trailed.
The Democratic victories in Congress will give the party control of the legislative agenda and greater power to scrutinise the Trump administration. The outcome represents a major reversal after Republicans controlled both chambers following the 2024 elections.
