A CBS News Sunday Morning investigation will examine the strain placed on the US military arsenal after more than six months of war with Iran, as the Pentagon confronts depleted stocks of long-range, precision-guided missiles.
The report says thousands of high-tech weapons were fired during the early stages of the conflict, raising concerns that the United States may not have enough missiles to sustain a war against a major military power such as China.
In response, the Pentagon has ordered the defence industry on to a wartime footing to rebuild its stockpiles. Restoring the arsenal is expected to cost billions of dollars and take years of manufacturing.
David Martin, CBS News national security correspondent, visited plants increasing production as part of the effort to replenish America’s weapons supply. The programme will also look at the Precision Strike Missile, a surface-to-surface weapon capable of hitting targets approximately 500 kilometres away.
The report forms the cover story of the edition hosted by Jane Pauley. The programme will also feature reports on shipwreck exploration, women’s professional baseball, Holocaust survivor testimony and the life of fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
