Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes Reece James has the qualities to become one of the best midfielders in the world and has confirmed that the club captain will be given a significant role in the centre of the pitch.
James, 26, is primarily known as a right-back but has already been used in midfield during Alonso’s early reign. The England international started centrally in Chelsea’s 3-1 pre-season victory over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge.
Asked whether James could reach the highest level as a midfielder, Alonso told The Telegraph: “I would say so. I would say that he’s very comfortable, very confident playing in that position.
“He has the intelligence to play there. He has the intelligence to connect with teammates in the middle, to know what’s the best thing before and after you get the ball. He has this awareness. I remember seeing him play very well in the middle.
“So yes, we are using him, and he will have a lot of minutes in there as a midfielder.”
Reece James set for extended Chelsea midfield role
Alonso has stressed that James’ versatility gives Chelsea valuable options, with the captain also capable of operating in a back three, at full-back or as a wing-back.
“Wherever he plays, as a right-back or as a midfielder, normally he makes the team better because of his quality, because of his game intelligence, his experience, his composure with the ball,” Alonso said in comments published by Chelsea.
The manager added that James needed to feel important to the team, not only because of his status as captain but also because of the influence he has on those around him.
James impressed in midfield during the final friendly of Chelsea’s preparations, providing an assist and creating two key chances. His ability to pass, compete physically and dictate play could offer Alonso an additional solution as he shapes his midfield for the new campaign.
Chelsea’s first Premier League fixture under Alonso is away to Fulham on Monday, with James in contention to feature. Whether he starts in midfield or returns to his customary defensive role, the manager has made clear that the captain will remain central to his plans.
