An Australian tourist has died after falling from a cliff at Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, an island about 20km off Bali’s south-eastern coast.
The 29-year-old woman was spotted apparently stranded on the cliff at about 8am on Saturday, after other tourists alerted a local lifeguard. As the lifeguard and local residents attempted to organise a rescue, she fell on to the rocky shoreline.
A Klungkung Police spokesman said the woman was found dead when rescuers reached the beach. She had suffered fractures to her arm and leg, as well as lacerations and other injuries.
The woman was believed to be from Queensland and was reportedly staying at a hostel on Nusa Penida.
Kelingking Beach is known for its dramatic headland, nicknamed “T-Rex Bay” because of its emerald-green cliff formation, which extends into the Indian Ocean in the shape of a dinosaur.
The location has become a popular tourist and selfie spot, with visitors reportedly queuing along the cliff edge to take photographs of the beach and surrounding landscape.
Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the fall.
