An Australian tourist has died after falling from a cliff at Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, an island about 20km off Bali’s south-eastern coast.
The 29-year-old woman appeared to be stranded on the cliff at about 8am on Saturday, when other tourists alerted a local lifeguard. As the lifeguard and residents attempted to organise a rescue, she fell on to the rocky shoreline.
A spokesman for Klungkung Police said the woman was found dead when she reached the beach. She had suffered fractures to her leg and arm, as well as lacerations and other injuries.
The woman was believed to be from Queensland and was reportedly staying at a hostel on Nusa Penida. Local authorities recovered her body.
Kelingking Beach is known for its distinctive headland, nicknamed “T-Rex Bay” because of its emerald-green cliff formation extending into the Indian Ocean in the shape of a dinosaur.
The site has become a popular location for photographs, with tourists reported to queue along the cliff edge to take pictures of the beach and surrounding coastline. Investigations into the circumstances of the fall are continuing.
