US stocks opened higher on Wednesday as enthusiasm for artificial intelligence shares helped the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average withstand renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran. At 9.56am in New York, the Dow was up 246.01 points, or 0.47%, at 53,012.89. The S&P 500 had gained 8.22 points, or 0.11%, to 7,639.69, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 14.92 points, or 0.06%, to 26,084.86. The latest US-Iran clashes have revived fears of a wider regional conflict and raised concerns about inflation, but investors continued to back the longer-term growth prospects of the AI sector. “When it comes to AI,…
William D DeFoor, 26, has pleaded guilty to federal charges over an attack on Vice President JD Vance’s Cincinnati home in January. DeFoor admitted charges of engaging in acts of physical violence against government officials or property and causing wilful injury or depredation to United States property, the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio said. The incident happened shortly after midnight on January 5, when Secret Service agents saw DeFoor running along the front fence of the protected residence. Court documents state that he crossed the property line and used a hammer to strike the window of…
Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project has become a stark test of whether the courts can restrain a presidency moving faster than the legal system. Construction is continuing at the White House despite rulings that the scheme probably breaches federal law and a Supreme Court decision that did not determine whether it is lawful. The Supreme Court’s 5-4 order on Monday, August 31, allowed work on the proposed ballroom to proceed while the underlying litigation returns to the lower courts. The justices ruled that the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which brought the challenge, was unlikely to have suffered the…
Ford is ramping up production of its F-Series pick-up trucks after fires at key aluminium supplier Novelis caused severe shortages, with more F-150s expected to reach US dealerships over the next three months. Rob Kaffl, Ford’s head of US sales, said output of the F-Series — including the F-150 and larger Super Duty models — had risen each month this year and was now broadly in line with, or slightly above, historical levels. “Dealers will start seeing in the next 30, 60, 90 days that ramp-up in production,” Mr Kaffl said. “We have a healthy chain of in-transit and in-system.”…
Adria Arjona has described the appeal of playing a flawed and unpredictable character in Onslaught, while discussing the action horror film and her work with Michael B. Jordan on The Thomas Crown Affair in an interview with CBS Mornings. Arjona said she “liked the messiness” of her character, Celeste, a former Army sniper and mother forced to confront a squad of genetically engineered super soldiers after they escape from a secret military facility. The film, directed by Adam Wingard, places Celeste at the centre of a violent fight to protect her young daughter. A24 is due to release Onslaught in…
HiddenLayer, the Austin-based cyber security company protecting artificial intelligence systems from attacks, has raised $100 million as businesses accelerate efforts to secure AI models, agents and automated workflows. The Series B funding round was led by Delta-v Capital, with backing from Ten Eleven Ventures, Morgan Stanley, Microsoft’s M12 venture fund, Booz Allen Hamilton and other investors. HiddenLayer said its annual recurring revenue had increased more than tenfold over the past year and was now in the “tens of millions” of dollars. More than 90% of that growth came from customers signed during the same period, according to co-founder and chief…
Transfer deadline-day manoeuvring involving Chelsea, Everton and Monaco ended with both Premier League clubs empty-handed after Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton collapsed and Lamine Camara’s switch to Chelsea was abandoned. The dramatic chain of events centred on Monaco’s need to raise funds before the window closed. The Ligue 1 club had been seeking about €150m (£129m) in player sales this summer and had generated €106m (£91m) before deadline day. Camara, a 22-year-old Senegal international midfielder, had emerged as a Chelsea target as the club prepared to sell Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125m. Chelsea had also made enquiries…
The US Department of Justice has widened its investigation into soaring beef prices to include eight of the country’s largest grocery retailers, including Walmart, Costco, Amazon and Kroger. Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward sent letters to the companies seeking information about recent increases in retail beef prices and their pricing, costs, margins and purchasing practices. The investigation now covers Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize USA, Costco and Amazon. The retailers have not been accused of wrongdoing. Letters sent on 14 July asked the companies to preserve relevant documents and provide details of their beef sales and pricing strategies,…
Tiger Woods has pleaded no contest to a reduced reckless driving charge after prosecutors dropped the original drink-driving allegation arising from a rollover crash in Florida. The 50-year-old golf champion appeared before Judge Darren Steele at the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Under the agreement, his driving licence will be suspended for five years and he must pay US$1,500 (£1,118) in fines. Woods initially denied charges of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to testing. The first charge was amended to willful reckless driving, while the second was reduced to a careless driving…
Two people have been charged with murder over the death of Aiden Zeallor, a 21-year-old driver who was killed by stray gunfire on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, nearly 18 months ago. Alondra M Lopez, 28, and Joseph G Toledo-Gonzalez, 27, were taken into custody on August 26 and also face attempted murder and other charges linked to the shooting. Both have been denied bail and remain in Philadelphia custody. Zeallor was driving north between Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue in the Port Richmond area at about 2.30am on March 29, 2025, when gunfire erupted around a nearby white Acura.…
