A foil helium balloon is believed to have sparked a field fire that spread to nearby homes in Kenninghall, Norfolk, destroying two bungalows and damaging a third property. The blaze broke out close to School Close on Sunday, 9 August, during dry and windy conditions. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said the fire spread rapidly, but crews managed to prevent further properties from being extensively damaged. Housing costs have become the defining issue in Montana’s western congressional race, giving Democrat Sam Forstag a chance to turn public anger over the state’s affordability crisis into an unlikely challenge to Republican Aaron Flint. The contest for the open seat has drawn national attention because it could help determine control of the US House. It is also a test of whether Democrats can regain ground in rural America, after years of losses in places that were once considered politically competitive. Forstag, a smokejumper, union leader and self-described progressive, is campaigning on the pressures facing workers who can no longer…

Companies are expanding their use of artificial intelligence, but the technology’s clear gains for individual workers have yet to produce a broad improvement in corporate profits, according to a global McKinsey survey. Almost nine in 10 respondents said their organisation regularly used AI in at least one business function, while 44% said deployment had reached an enterprise-wide scale. Yet only 37% reported a meaningful effect on earnings before interest and tax (EBIT), a proportion that has remained broadly unchanged over the past year. The findings, based on responses from 1,719 professionals and business leaders across 97 countries, underline the difficulty…

Samantha Armytage’s return to Australia’s Today show has failed to deliver the ratings boost Channel Nine may have been hoping for, amid continuing uncertainty over the programme’s presenting line-up. Armytage stepped back into the hosting chair after Sylvia Jeffreys’ stint on the breakfast programme, as Nine continues to assess potential replacements for former co-host Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, who is on maternity leave. The veteran broadcaster is no stranger to early-morning television, having previously hosted Seven’s Sunrise before joining Nine as the presenter of The Golden Bachelor Australia. Her latest appearance has nevertheless done little to alter Today’s position…

Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation Adreno Neural Fusion GPU, which will bring dedicated artificial intelligence processing into the graphics pipeline of its forthcoming flagship Snapdragon chipset. The design introduces dedicated “Matrix Cores” within each of the GPU’s three 1.45GHz slices. Qualcomm says the hardware will allow AI models to run alongside graphics processing, rather than relying solely on separate system components. The company has also built an 18MB High Performance Memory cache directly into the Adreno GPU. It is intended to keep data such as rendering tiles, frame buffers and compute workloads close to the graphics hardware, reducing the need…

Everton supporters have launched a fierce backlash against the club’s transfer-window planning, with the Everton Fans’ Forum warning that David Moyes’ squad has been left “dangerously short” in key areas. The criticism followed a chaotic deadline day in which Jack Grealish returned from Manchester City on loan and Ainsley Maitland-Niles joined from Lyon, while proposed striker Folarin Balogun’s move from Monaco collapsed after a deal sheet had been submitted. Manatee County commissioners are weighing a new short-term rental programme that could require thousands of holiday-let properties to register, undergo inspections and meet occupancy and safety standards — but county staff estimate the first year of enforcement could cost about $1.5 million. The issue is due to be discussed at a commission work session in Bradenton on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. No ordinance is being voted on at the meeting, which is intended to help commissioners decide how the county should proceed. China does not deliberately pursue a trade surplus and will continue to expand domestic demand and open its economy, People’s Bank of China governor Pan Gongsheng has told a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank chiefs.
