A foil helium balloon is believed to have sparked a field fire that spread to nearby homes in Kenninghall, Norfolk, destroying two bungalows and damaging a third property.
The blaze broke out close to School Close on Sunday, 9 August, during dry and windy conditions. Seven fire engines and a water carrier were sent to the scene as flames raced from the field towards the residential area.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said the fire spread rapidly, but crews managed to prevent further properties from being extensively damaged. No injuries were reported, and the fire was extinguished later that afternoon.
UK Power Networks said an independent forensic investigation had identified a foil-coated helium balloon as the most likely cause. Investigators found debris believed to have come from the balloon on equipment attached to an electricity pole near the field.
The balloon is thought to have come into contact with an overhead power line, creating an electrical arc which ignited it. Burning material then fell on to the dry ground below, starting the fire.
UK Power Networks said no fault or other problem had been found with its equipment. The network was switched off at the request of the fire service while crews dealt with the blaze, which the company described as a rare incident.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said the village hall had been opened for residents affected by the fire. The service had initially said the blaze was accidental and that investigations were under way to establish how it started.
