A 14-year-old boy has been charged after a 25-year-old man was allegedly struck with rocks and knocked unconscious outside a Hungry Jack’s restaurant in Falcon, near Mandurah.
Police allege the man was targeted by a group of teenagers on Monday afternoon after intervening when they were reportedly harassing restaurant workers. The two parties were not known to each other, according to investigators.
Footage of the incident, which was recorded and shared on social media, appears to show several youths surrounding the man in the car park. He was hit before falling face-first on to the bitumen and losing consciousness.
The man was taken by ambulance to Peel Health Campus with severe facial injuries. He has since been released from hospital but is expected to require further treatment and faces a lengthy recovery. Acting Senior Sergeant Jamie Raper said the 14-year-old was arrested at a home in Falcon on Wednesday morning and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.
“We believe there might have been an altercation earlier in the restaurant where the juveniles were potentially harassing some of the workers there and we believe that this male has stepped in to protect those workers,” he said.
Senior Sergeant Raper warned members of the public against intervening in violent incidents, urging them instead to call emergency services on triple zero.
“It’s a public safety thing, we don’t want members of the community hurt,” he said.
The teenager has been released on bail and is due to appear in Mandurah Children’s Court on September 14. Police said further charges could be laid against other members of the group, whose identities are known to investigators. Police are also investigating reports of youths causing trouble in the Halls Head and Falcon areas, including incidents involving e-bikes, and are considering additional patrols and drone surveillance.
“You’re certainly not going to get away with it,” Senior Sergeant Raper said. “You’re going to be held responsible for your actions, expect a knock on the door and a visit to the police station.”
