Donald Trump has backed Vivek Ramaswamy after the Ohio governor candidate faced bipartisan backlash over an attack advert targeting his opponent, Amy Acton.
The advert features Acton’s estranged mother calling her a liar over allegations of abuse. Acton’s stepfather was charged with raping her when she was a child, while her mother was married to him, according to the claims outlined in the campaign controversy.
Trump said the criticism of the advert amounted to a “concerted and well-coordinated attack” by the press. He urged Ramaswamy to continue broadcasting the mother’s comments.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: “I suggested, on the other hand, that Vivek should keep it up, and let everyone listen to the mother of a defective, dishonest, and incapable Candidate, explain how the daughter is a DISASTER who, uncontrollably, lies, cheats, and steals!”
He referred to the Democratic hopeful as “Lyin’ Amy Acton” and said he had never heard of her before.
Trump also gave Ramaswamy his support in the gubernatorial race, writing: “I know the real Vivek, he is a brilliant and outstanding person who will cut Taxes, stop Crime and, MAKE OHIO GREAT AGAIN. He will be a fantastic Governor!”
The advert has drawn criticism across party lines. Ramaswamy’s betting odds of winning the race have also plunged sharply since the video was released.
