The Milwaukee Brewers used World Series Media Day to underline their determination to stay sharp after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers, with manager Pat Murphy insisting the team had prepared through live baseball rather than allowing the lay-off to become an excuse.
Milwaukee secured its first National League pennant since 1982 with a 6-4 victory over the Dodgers in Game Four of the Championship Series. The Brewers will now host the Tampa Bay Rays in Game One of the World Series at American Family Field on Friday October 23. Brewers prepare for World Series after Dodgers sweep
Murphy said the squad had initially eased its workload following an emotional series in Los Angeles and the cross-country journey home, but had since intensified preparations with live batting practice.
“We played baseball, that’s how we prepared,” the manager said. He added that no training session could fully replicate the demands of a competitive game.
The Brewers’ return to the World Series comes 44 years after their previous appearance. Their victory over the Dodgers also reversed last season’s outcome, when Los Angeles swept Milwaukee in the National League Championship Series. Pitcher Jacob Misiorowski was asked about a viral video featuring a young Brewers supporter named Samson, who celebrated the team’s progress and listed Misiorowski and outfielder Jackson Chourio among his favourite players.
Misiorowski said it was “an honour” to have such an effect on supporters, describing the reaction as incredible and admitting he was short of words.
Owner Mark Attanasio credited Milwaukee’s supporters, sponsors and community leaders with helping the club compete despite operating in one of Major League Baseball’s smallest media markets.
Attanasio said that backing had enabled the Brewers to maintain a payroll around 19th or 20th among the league’s 30 teams, while ensuring that the organisation continued to put its resources back into the squad.
President of Baseball Operations Matt Arnold attributed the positive atmosphere around the club to a combination of performance and shared belief. He said the organisation had built a culture around people willing to commit to its long-term vision.
Major League Baseball confirmed that Milwaukee finished the regular season with a 103-59 record, giving the Brewers home advantage against the Rays, who ended 98-64.
