Ryan Gravenberch could be deployed at right-back when Liverpool return to Premier League action against Brighton this weekend, with manager Andoni Iraola weighing up his options after Tuesday’s 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal.
The Netherlands international is available again after serving a domestic suspension and started in an advanced midfield role against the Spanish side. However, Florian Wirtz is expected to return to the number 10 position after making a significant impact in the second half.
That could force Gravenberch to compete for a deeper midfield place or move into the backline. A report has suggested Iraola is considering using the 24-year-old at right-back as part of a more fluid tactical approach.
How Ryan Gravenberch at right-back could change Liverpool’s shape
Gravenberch would offer a different option from a conventional overlapping full-back. In possession, he could move into central areas, using his composure under pressure and ability to carry the ball forward to help Liverpool create extra numbers in midfield.
His experience across several midfield positions could make the adjustment possible, although there has been no confirmation that Iraola has decided to make the switch against Brighton.
Ronald Araujo has occupied the right-back position in recent matches and has provided Liverpool with additional defensive strength and physicality. The Barcelona loanee has impressed, while Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet have formed the central defensive partnership.
Araujo was replaced at half-time against Villarreal as Liverpool made tactical changes to improve their attacking play. If Gravenberch starts at right-back, the Uruguay international could be rested following a demanding run of fixtures.
Brighton’s strong start to the Premier League season may also influence Iraola’s decision. Fabian Hürzeler’s side have won five of their opening seven matches and are capable of competing for possession and applying pressure through central areas.
Liverpool must therefore decide whether Araujo’s defensive qualities are required to deal with Brighton’s threat in wide positions, or whether Gravenberch’s ability to move into midfield would provide greater control in possession.
