Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was reportedly the victim of a burglary at his home in Nether Alderley, Cheshire, while he was playing in the club’s Champions League match against Como in Italy.
Three men are believed to have entered the property at about 8.30pm on Wednesday before leaving within minutes. Fernandes’ family were not at home at the time, according to reports.
Cheshire Police said officers had been called after reports of three unknown men in the rear garden of a residential property. On arrival, officers established that a burglary had taken place and that several items had been stolen.
Detectives are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area as part of their investigation.
Fernandes burglary follows difficult night for Manchester United captain
The incident came as Fernandes was enduring a turbulent evening on and off the pitch. United suffered a 4-1 defeat by Como, with the result adding to pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
In his post-match interview, Fernandes questioned the team’s tactical approach and said United had not been sufficiently bold when attempting to press their opponents.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence,” he said.
“That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.”
Carrick responded by saying that no tactical system would work “if you don’t run forward and don’t run back”. United are now without a win in seven matches, with the public exchange increasing scrutiny on the club.
