A group of tradesmen restrained an axe-wielding man after an alleged carjacking attempt following an eight-vehicle crash in Melbourne’s north.
Emergency services were called to the collision at the intersection of Sydney Road and Bolinda Road in Campbellfield at about 7am on Thursday.
Police allege one of the drivers, a 29-year-old man from Altona North, was wearing a balaclava and gloves and carrying an axe when he tried to take another motorist’s vehicle.
The man was reportedly struck by a ute during the incident and thrown into the air. He then got to his feet and ran down a nearby street before being chased and tackled by a group of tradesmen.
Images from the scene showed the man lying face down with his hands restrained by cable ties as police arrived.
He was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Witness Nicholas said he had heard “a big ‘bang bang’ couple times” before seeing the man run from the scene.
“It was surprising how quick they grabbed him, but you know what, at least he got caught and hopefully he doesn’t do that again,” he said.
Another witness, Jaimie, said he had no sympathy for the man.
“He deserved it, 100 per cent deserved it, no remorse,” he said.
Police understand the Toyota involved had been stolen from Reservoir three days earlier.
Investigators are continuing to examine the alleged carjacking attempt and have not yet identified the motorist who was allegedly targeted. Anyone who witnessed the incident, has footage or holds information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
