A group of delivery riders are living in a makeshift tent encampment beneath a railway bridge in Shoreditch, amid complaints about public urination, drug use and antisocial behaviour. The site on Fleet Street Hill, close to Brick Lane and little more than a mile from the City of London, is occupied by around a dozen men, many understood to be Sudanese migrants. Deliveroo and Gopuff bags, bicycles and electric bikes sit beside the tents, with riders appearing to use the location as a base between shifts. The camp has no running water or proper sanitation. Residents cook on portable stoves,…
Andy Burnham will face his first major test in the Commons this week as MPs return from summer recess, with warnings that the informal style which helped propel him into Downing Street will not be enough to withstand sustained parliamentary scrutiny. The Prime Minister is due to appear at the Government dispatch box on Tuesday, September 1, for the first time since becoming leader. He will then face Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch across the chamber at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday. It will be the first direct confrontation between the pair since Mr Burnham replaced Sir Keir Starmer in July.…
Brooklyn Beckham spent Saturday evening at home in Los Angeles with his wife Nicola Peltz, while his parents and siblings gathered in Berkshire to support his younger brother Cruz at Reading Festival. Cruz, 21, performed with his band The Breakers on the festival’s Canopy stage on August 29, marking the group’s appearance at the event. David and Victoria Beckham were seen watching from the side of the stage as their son played a half-hour set. The performance came shortly after Cruz released his debut EP, Wear & Tear, on August 21. The six-track record was made with The Breakers and…
Sacked comedian Lisa Jane Spencer appeared at an anti-immigration rally in Melbourne on Sunday, where she delivered a parody “welcome to country” alongside neo-Nazi figure Joel Davis. About 600 people attended the March for Australia demonstration, which began near Flinders Street Station before moving through the city centre to Victoria’s Parliament House. The event was promoted by organisers as a protest against what they described as restrictions on free speech. Spencer drew criticism in June after posting a video in which she pretended to identify as Aboriginal. The skit included stereotypical Aboriginal imagery, face paint and a scene showing her…
Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Nadiya Bychkova is said to have complained to three senior BBC executives about a colleague she alleged made her feel uncomfortable, but continued to work alongside the person during filming. The complaint was made in 2024, when Bychkova reportedly asked BBC managers to intervene and prevent further contact with the individual. However, despite raising her concerns, she was still required to work in close proximity to the colleague on the programme. According to a source familiar with the matter, the BBC’s then HR production director offered to begin a formal investigation and said the colleague…
Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a woman believed to be in her seventies was found in a walled garden at Stanley Park in Liverpool. Officers were called to the park at around 5.25pm on Friday, August 28, after a member of the public reported discovering the body. The woman has not yet been identified and police are continuing efforts to trace her relatives. Preliminary inquiries indicate that she may have been in the area for several weeks. Doria Ragland is due to turn 70 on Wednesday as her daughter Meghan and son-in-law Prince Harry begin a new chapter in Britain, leaving the Duchess’s mother living thousands of miles away in California. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, on August 26 after deciding to spend an extended period in Harry’s home country. The family is expected to live at a private, non-royal property, with the children due to attend school in Britain. Ragland, however, is not expected to join them. Reports say she intends to remain…
Rajendra Dawadi was told on the morning of Wednesday, August 26, that a village upstream had been overwhelmed by floodwater. Within minutes, the principal ordered the evacuation of about 1,600 pupils from Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Nepal’s Nuwakot district. The children were moved towards higher ground as the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems rose rapidly. Soon afterwards, the school buildings, which stood around 60 metres above the river, were destroyed by a torrent carrying mud, rocks and debris. The school had 1,643 pupils enrolled up to Year 12. Around 900 children were already taking part in the morning…
By July 1945, Daphne du Maurier’s wartime attachment to Christopher Puxley was drawing to a close as her husband, Tommy ‘Boy’ Browning, prepared to return from service in the Far East. The novelist had spent much of the war living with her children at Langley End, the Hertfordshire home of Puxley and his wife, Naumai, known as Paddy. Browning’s military duties kept him away for long periods, leaving du Maurier increasingly close to the couple who had provided her family with a place to stay. Puxley, whose formal name was Henry Waller Lavallin Puxley, had been unable to serve in…
