Robert Guanco, a 41-year-old pastor and father from Eastbourne, has been named as the man who died after a large wooden sign fell at the Big Church Festival in West Sussex.
The structure collapsed at the Christian music event on the Wiston Estate, near Steyning, at about 3.38pm on Friday, August 28. Sussex Police said officers were called after reports that a large sign had fallen and injured several people.
Mr Guanco was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Jesus the Living Water Church in Eastbourne, where he served as a pastor, described him as a “faithful servant of God”, a loving husband and a devoted father. He is survived by his wife, Isay, and their daughter, Ellie.
The church said it was mourning and praying with the family, adding that Mr Guanco’s life, faith and service would not be forgotten.
At least five other people were assessed by ambulance crews following the collapse. Four were taken to hospital for further treatment, including two with more serious injuries and two whose injuries were described as less serious.
South East Coast Ambulance Service said crews, critical care paramedics and specialist response teams attended the site.
The festival, which had been due to continue through the August bank holiday weekend, was brought to an end after the incident. Organisers said they were “devastated” and that their focus was on those directly affected.
Sussex Police remained at the site on Saturday as officers worked with Horsham District Council and other agencies to establish what happened. The Health and Safety Executive and the local authority have also been informed.
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh said the incident had caused immense distress among the thousands of people attending the festival.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collapse or captured relevant footage to contact them, quoting Operation Igloo. Officers said the investigation would also support the coronial process.
The event, founded in 2009, describes itself as the UK’s biggest Christian festival. It was being held at the Wiston Estate, off Washington Road, when the structure gave way. A section of the A283 was temporarily closed while emergency services responded.
