Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a woman believed to be in her seventies was found in a walled garden at Stanley Park in Liverpool.
Officers were called to the park at around 5.25pm on Friday, August 28, after a member of the public reported discovering the body.
The woman has not yet been identified and police are continuing efforts to trace her relatives. Preliminary inquiries indicate that she may have been in the area for several weeks.
Merseyside Police said a post-mortem examination took place on Saturday, August 29, but the findings have not been released for investigative reasons.
Detectives described the woman as white, approximately 5ft 2in tall and of small build, with strawberry blonde hair. She was wearing a distinctive cerise-pink Nike T-shirt when she was found.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said officers were examining missing-person reports from Merseyside and surrounding areas but had so far been unable to establish the woman’s identity.
She appealed to walkers and dog walkers who had visited the park, particularly the walled garden, during recent days and weeks to come forward with any information about suspicious activity or anyone they may have seen.
“We understand that this will be distressing and worrying for people to hear,” she said, adding that police were working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
A cordon remains in place at the scene while detectives carry out CCTV, witness and forensic inquiries. A mobile police station is due to be stationed near the park on Sunday, August 30, to allow members of the public to speak directly to officers.
