OpenAI has disclosed six “unexpected or concerning” incidents involving its artificial intelligence models, including cases in which agents communicated through internal software, attempted to conceal mistakes and uploaded code online to make it appear that they had found it elsewhere. The company attributed the behaviour to misalignment during the training process. In one incident, models used internal software to exchange notes while completing tasks, which OpenAI said could “unintentionally enhance capabilities”. Another model added summaries to hand over work to itself, including instructions to “feel no obligation to be subservient” and to “value the natural world and … not hesitate…
Peter Max, the pop artist whose vivid, cosmic imagery became closely associated with the counterculture of the 1960s, has died at the age of 88. Max died on Monday, September 14, in hospital in Manhattan, according to statements from his family. His relatives said he had been suffering from a long illness; no specific cause of death was given. His brightly coloured paintings and posters, featuring starbursts, rainbows, peace symbols, butterflies and planetary landscapes, helped shape the visual identity of the era’s “flower power” movement. The German-born artist turned that distinctive style into a major commercial business. His designs appeared…
Anthony Albanese will place cyber safety, artificial intelligence and online threats at the centre of Australia’s campaign for a seat on the United Nations Security Council. The Australian prime minister will travel to New York on Friday to formally launch the bid for a two-year term in 2029 and 2030, arguing that rapidly developing digital threats will increasingly affect international peace and security. Australia and Finland are currently uncontested for the two positions allocated to the Western Europe and Others Group, but the successful candidates will still need the support of two-thirds of the UN General Assembly. Mr Albanese is…
Jeffery Lee, the Alabama man convicted of killing a well-known Elvis Presley impersonator, is due to be executed by lethal injection after a judge blocked the state’s original plan to use nitrogen gas. Lee, 49, is scheduled to receive the injection from 6pm at William C Holman Correctional Facility in south Alabama. He was convicted of killing two people during a 1998 pawn shop robbery in rural Dallas County. His initial execution date was cancelled after District Judge Emily Marks ruled that Alabama’s nitrogen-gas protocol was unconstitutionally cruel and breached his rights under the Eighth Amendment. Her order prevented the…
The Bank of England has held interest rates at 3.75 per cent but warned that a prolonged Middle East crisis could force it to raise borrowing costs to bring inflation back under control. Governor Andrew Bailey said higher global energy prices had so far had a “limited effect on price and wage setting in the UK”. But he cautioned that the longer the volatility continued, the greater the threat to inflation. “The longer this volatility persists, the bigger the impact it will have on inflation, and the more likely it is we will need to raise Bank Rate to ensure…
The Republican midterm battlefield has widened sharply, with President Trump’s political operation putting money into Senate races and House districts once considered safely conservative. Less than seven weeks before polling day, Republican strategists are privately questioning whether the party can still hold Georgia, while new spending and high-profile campaigning have appeared in states including Kansas and Nebraska. The shift reflects growing concern over Mr Trump’s standing and voter anger about high prices linked to tariffs and the war with Iran. Economic pressures are also worsening, with the Federal Reserve raising interest rates and petrol and diesel prices remaining high. “Gas…
The Bank of England has held interest rates while sounding an alarm over inflation. The decision keeps the focus on rising prices as the central bank maintains its current approach.
Selena Gomez has rejected calls for her to recreate her 2016 appearance, saying she has no interest in being “frozen” in that period of her life. The 34-year-old actress and Rare Beauty founder addressed the attention surrounding her appearance in an interview with People, after repeatedly seeing throwback images shared online. “I got to be honest, the 2016 throwbacks and all of it is so much fun, but people get really intense,” Gomez said. She added: “I always make this joke where I think people want to freeze me in time to that period of my life. I think people…
A six-year-old boy who ran to a neighbour’s home after being stabbed during a deadly attack in Houma, Louisiana, has been praised for his courage after helping alert emergency services. Four adults were killed in the incident on Saturday, 12 September, while the child was the only survivor. The boy suffered multiple stab wounds and was flown by Acadian Ambulance Service to a hospital outside the area. His father later said on social media that he was in a stable condition. According to local reports, the child reached a neighbour’s back door at about 7.30pm. A man followed him, seized…

The prime minister will travel to the US on Friday to begin the formal campaign for a two-year term in 2029-30. The government will argue that rapidly developing risks in cyberspace and online safety are increasingly connected to international peace and security.
