His parents, Sergio and Claudia Tapia, said the assault happened with terrifying speed. “I remember him taking his final breath,” Claudia said. “There was hate that came to our house.” Sergio said the attack had left an indelible mark on the family.…
Israel’s culture minister has said he will seek to revoke the Israeli citizenship of the two directors behind the documentary “NAZA”, after it won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Miki Zohar accused Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor of betraying Israel over the film, which features interviews with 24 people identified as Israeli military and intelligence whistleblowers. The interviewees allege that artificial intelligence-powered targeting systems were used in Gaza to kill Palestinian civilians. The claims have not been independently established. In a social media post, Mr Zohar said he would “act immediately to revoke the Israeli citizenship…
Sam Altman has warned that artificial intelligence could go “very badly” in two distinct ways, as the OpenAI chief called for the technology’s rapid progress to be slowed. Writing on X, Mr Altman said the first danger was that humanity could “lose control of the future of AI”, which he described as “unacceptable”. “We are unapologetically on Team Humanity and AI must always serve people,” he said, arguing that safety and alignment measures must remain ahead of advances in AI capabilities. His second concern was excessive concentration of power. Mr Altman warned that if a highly powerful AI system were…

Bruno Fernandes failed to provide Manchester United with the decisive influence they needed as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat by 10-man Manchester City at Old Trafford. United were handed a major advantage when Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, but they could not turn their numerical superiority into a goal. Fernandes helped United retain possession, yet finished without a goal or assist as Erling Haaland’s strike settled the Manchester derby. United’s attacking dominance was reflected in the numbers. They registered 16 shots to City’s six, although only three were on target, while their expected goals total…

Only 15 per cent of people living in rural areas believe Labour cares about the countryside, polling for the Countryside Alliance has found. The findings will be presented as the Countryside Alliance launches its new Campaign for the Countryside in Westminster. Former Labour home secretary Lord Blunkett and former Conservative prime minister Lord Cameron are due to speak…
America is facing a small-business succession crisis as millions of ageing owners approach retirement without a clear plan for transferring or selling the companies they built, JPMorganChase has warned. A report from Chase found that 70% of 1,000 business owners surveyed were only in the early stages of succession planning, while just 8% said they had reached an advanced stage. The bank estimates that about 12 million businesses, representing almost 10 trillion dollars (ÂŁ7.4 trillion) in assets, are expected to change hands over the next decade. In industries it considers critical to national security, more than half of businesses have…
A woman who killed her husband in Sydney acted through a “survival mechanism” developed during years of alleged domestic violence, her defence barrister has told the NSW Supreme Court. Nirmeen Noufl, 62, is facing sentencing for manslaughter after killing Mahmoud Noufl during an altercation at their home in Greenacre between May 3 and May 4, 2023. His remains were later placed in garbage bags and dispersed across Sydney, and have never been found. Ms Noufl had initially been charged with murder and was due to stand trial last month. She was instead allowed to plead guilty to the lesser charge…
