Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the season with a 4-2 victory over Levante in Valencia, as Lamine Yamal scored twice to help preserve their position at the top of La Liga. Xavi Espart and Karim Adeyemi were also on target for Barcelona, who have won all six of their matches in all competitions. They have five league victories and lead Real Madrid by three points. Barcelona took control after only five minutes when Espart finished a slick one-touch move from the edge of the penalty area, with his effort taking a slight deflection on its way in. It was…
Donald Trump has downplayed AI safety concerns and rejected calls to slow its development, while House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that a moratorium could allow China to overtake the United States in the technology. Speaking to reporters at his golf resort in Doonbeg, Ireland, the US president said warnings about artificial intelligence becoming uncontrollable had been exaggerated. “We’re leading China in AI, we’re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins,” Mr Trump said. He added that safeguards could be introduced but accused unspecified “negative forces” of…
Courteney Cox has paid tribute to her late Scream co-star Hayden Panettiere, remembering their final time working together as full of laughter and shared enjoyment. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she was promoting her new film Evil Genius, Cox described Panettiere as a “really wonderful actor”. Cox said Panettiere was fun, happy and smart, adding that the actress’s death was “really sad” and “obviously horrible”. The pair first appeared together in 2011’s Scream 4 and reunited for Scream VI in 2023. Panettiere reprised her popular role as Kirby Reed in the later film. Panettiere…
Gary Neville defended Bruno Fernandes’ reaction in Manchester United’s 1-0 derby defeat by Manchester City, despite admitting he did not approve of the United captain’s attempt to influence the referee. The incident came during a first-half confrontation at Old Trafford, when Fernandes swiped at Phil Foden as the Manchester City midfielder lay on the ground. Foden then kicked out at Fernandes and was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver. Fernandes appeared to exaggerate the contact, prompting a heated discussion between Neville and Roy Keane after the match. Gary Neville and Roy Keane debate Bruno Fernandes incident Neville…
T.J. Watt’s fourth-quarter interception return gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a 20-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, after two costly turnovers proved decisive in a tight contest. Watt intercepted a short pass intended for Bijan Robinson and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown early in the final quarter. The linebacker briefly slipped during the return before recovering his footing and reaching the end zone. The play extended Pittsburgh’s lead to 20-10 and settled a game in which Atlanta’s defence had largely kept Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers under control. Rodgers completed 24 of 40 passes…
Australia faces growing security risks from the deepening military co-operation between China, Russia and North Korea, experts and political figures have warned as the three countries work together in the war in Ukraine. David Petraeus, the former director of the CIA and a former senior US Army general, said China was rapidly developing weapons and had the industrial capacity to manufacture them in large numbers for Russia. Speaking at a security conference in Kyiv, General Petraeus said China was studying the war closely while supplying components for Russia’s military-industrial complex, including drones and robotic systems. “We should be very concerned…
Pauline Hanson’s One Nation has proposed cutting Australia’s temporary migrant population by about 750,000 over three years, with international students and graduate visa holders among those targeted by the immigration crackdown. The plan would push net overseas migration below zero during a three-year “reset”, before imposing a permanent annual ceiling of 130,000 arrivals. That would be significantly below the Labor government’s forecast of 245,000 net overseas arrivals in the current financial year and 225,000 a year thereafter. One Nation says the temporary migrant population has grown from just over two million when Labor came to power in 2022 to roughly…
Bo French, the Republican nominee for a statewide post on Texas’s Railroad Commission, has faced condemnation from senior Republicans after describing a group of Asian American students at a University of Texas football game as “a problem”. French posted a photograph on X showing students celebrating in the crowd and wrote: “I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.” Senator John Cornyn called the post racist and challenged other Republican officials to condemn it. “This is the Republican nominee for statewide office,” Mr Cornyn wrote.…
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has shared a glimpse of the Sussexes’ new life in Britain, showing Prince Harry and their children enjoying the English countryside. The 35-second video was posted on Instagram on Sunday, less than three weeks after Meghan and Harry returned to the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet following six years in California. The family arrived on August 26, and Archie and Lilibet have since started the new school year in Britain. The montage opens with Meghan and Harry walking hand-in-hand through the countryside. Meghan then turns towards the camera and says playfully: “Come on, you”.…
Two people have died after a high-speed boat struck a rocky peninsula on Lake Havasu in Arizona, became airborne and crashed into a remote campsite. Charles Romer, 65, and Jennifer Luzzi, 59, both from Lake Havasu City, were pronounced dead at the scene following the crash on Saturday evening, 12 September. Deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Division were called shortly after 7pm to an area north of Cattail Cove State Park. They found a 36ft 2019 Douglas Marine boat overturned on dry land. The vessel had been travelling at high speed when it hit a large…
