Irish AFLW recruit Saoirse Lally is still learning Australian slang after making a rapid transition from Gaelic football to St Kilda, where a question from coach Nick Dal Santo left her expecting a lift rather than asking about her wellbeing. At the Saints’ season launch, Dal Santo asked Lally, “How are you travelling?” The 24-year-old, who previously captained County Mayo, replied: “By car.” “Oh god, I had no idea what that meant,” Lally said. “I think nearly every day someone says something, and I don’t know whether to say ‘what does that mean’ or just to like nod and smile.…
Friends, family, fans and fellow surfers gathered at Bronte Beach on Saturday for a paddle-out tribute to Bondi Rescue lifeguard Matt Dee, who died suddenly aged 47 earlier this month. Those attending placed flowers along the sand before taking to the water with their surfboards to honour the former television star, who appeared on the Australian reality series from 2008 to 2017. The gathering continued with food, drinks and music as mourners shared memories of Dee, who spent almost a decade saving lives on Sydney’s eastern beaches. Fellow lifeguards joined the tribute, while surfers formed a large circle in the…
A quarter of a century after the 11 September attacks transformed air travel, the Transportation Security Administration is looking to make airport screening faster and less intrusive without weakening security. The TSA was created in November 2001, in the aftermath of the attacks, replacing the patchwork of private companies that had previously screened passengers at US airports. Long queues, restrictions on liquids and the removal of shoes became familiar features of flying. Since then, the agency has introduced technology intended to reduce the burden on travellers. Computed tomography scanners create three-dimensional images of cabin baggage, allowing security officers to examine…
Fire crews extricated a woman from a car after it lost control and crashed into a wall on Market Street in the early hours of Saturday morning. Five people were travelling in the red Holden Astra when the collision happened at about 3.45am. The male driver and three other occupants were not injured. The female passenger, who is in her 30s, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with minor injuries. Two crews from Vincent Fire Station attended the scene and freed one person from the vehicle. Police inquiries into the crash are continuing.
A Mississippi man has been arrested and charged with murder after a woman was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned house in Jackson. Jarques Ratliff, 51, was detained on Friday in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, 29, whose body was discovered on 3 August. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said Ratliff had an “association” with Fortune, although police have not disclosed the nature of their relationship. Fortune’s death was formally classified as a homicide on Thursday evening, enabling investigators to obtain a search warrant and an arrest warrant, Chief Brackney said. Ratliff was arrested after officers…
Dolly Parton’s first posthumous song, Bound To Ride, will appear on a tribute album marking 80 years of bluegrass duo The Stanley Brothers. Parton recorded the track in 2022 at her private studio, during a surge in Covid-19 cases. She chose not to travel because she did not want to take any chances. The song will feature on Where The Soul Never Dies, produced by husband-and-wife team Garry West and Alison Brown as a tribute to Carter and Ralph Stanley. Bluegrass was a genre particularly loved by Parton, who died aged 80 on 25 August after a brief battle with…
Oakland mayor Barbara Lee has reflected on the September 11 attacks, recalling the fear and confusion in Washington as a member of Congress and condemning what she described as the unjustifiable use of sweeping military powers in the years that followed. Speaking on the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Ms Lee said the scale of the tragedy had been difficult to comprehend as events unfolded. She also paid tribute to the emergency workers, public servants and members of the public who came together in the aftermath. Ms Lee was the only member of Congress to vote against the 2001 Authorization…
An Australian man has been charged with drug possession in Bali after police allegedly found dozens of cannabis packets and other suspected narcotics in his room in Denpasar. Arron Robert Brokenshire, 36, from Mona Vale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, was arrested at the Dewi Sri Apartment in Pemogan Village at about 7pm local time on August 10. Denpasar Police said the arrest followed several days of investigation after receiving information from the local community that a foreign man was allegedly distributing drugs in South Denpasar. Officers searching the room allegedly found 37 small packets of cannabis with a combined weight…
Two American women have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling cannabis worth about $1 million into Japan after arriving at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport from New York. The women, both aged 25, allegedly carried two suitcases containing 35 bags of “cannabis-like dried plants” which had been secretly hidden inside. The haul weighed about 66lb (30kg) and was valued at approximately 150 million yen at street prices, according to local reports. Japanese customs officers reportedly became suspicious during an inspection and searched the luggage, discovering the cannabis inside the black suitcases. Police said the bags had been loaded on to a flight…
