The Milwaukee Brewers came from four runs down to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 in Game 2 of the World Series, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Tampa Bay raced into a 4-0 advantage in the first inning at American Family Field on Saturday night, but Milwaukee steadily fought its way back before completing its latest postseason recovery.
Sal Frelick levelled the game with his first home run in three months, before shortstop Cooper Pratt delivered the decisive run with a single in the seventh inning.
The result marked the Brewers’ seventh comeback victory of the post-season. They had also overturned a four-run deficit against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series.
Milwaukee began its response with two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Rays starter Drew Rasmussen. Tampa Bay, which had won the American League pennant by capitalising on opponents’ mistakes, was charged with one error and made two further misplays during the game.
The Rays also had a runner thrown out at home plate as the Brewers secured a second successive victory after winning Friday’s opener 3-2.
World Series moves to Tampa Bay
The series now switches to Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, where the Rays will host Game 3 on Monday, October 26. First pitch is scheduled for 8pm Eastern Time.
Tampa Bay will also host Game 4 on Tuesday, with a fifth game at home on Wednesday if required. Any further games would return to Milwaukee.
The Brewers earned home-field advantage after finishing the regular season with a franchise-record 103 wins, compared with 98 for the Rays, the best mark in the American League.
Both clubs are seeking the first World Series title in their history. Milwaukee are appearing in the championship series for the second time, having previously reached it in 1982, while Tampa Bay are making their third appearance after defeats in 2008 and 2020.
