Point Of Law was scratched from the Caulfield Cup after a treatment mishap at the Werribee quarantine centre left trainer Ciaron Maher $2,000 out of pocket.
Maher’s right-hand man, Jack Turnbull, pleaded guilty to racing stewards on the trainer’s behalf after the imported stayer was given Gastropell on race day. The paste is used to prevent gastric ulcers, but its use breached racing rules.
The incident ultimately had no bearing on the field, as Point Of Law was the third emergency and would not have secured a start in the Caulfield Cup.
Maher’s stable hand Samantha Waters, who usually looks after Pride Of Jenni, was also fined after using inappropriate language towards stewards over the incident.
Maher was pictured with broadcaster Bruce McAvaney on Channel Seven last weekend.
