Erin Foster has responded to Adam Brody’s comments on Israel and Palestine, saying she disagrees with her Nobody Wants This co-star while stressing that the Netflix series remains “a love letter to Judaism”.
Brody, who plays a Jewish rabbi in the show, voiced support for the “Free Palestine” movement in a recent interview with GQ. Asked about Israel and Palestine, he said: “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine.”
He added: “It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago… I’m hopeful that another administration can really do some good and correct some of these policies that are helping that situation be as awful as it is.”
Foster, who has been vocal in her support for Israel, addressed the comments during an episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast due to debut on 27 October.
“You know, it’s complicated. I think our work environment, our set is very similar to dinner tables around the world where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing,” she said.
“And you know, while I love Adam, I also disagree with him. And that’s okay.”
Foster said she wanted Jewish viewers to understand the intention behind the series, which has returned for a third season.
“I think that as the creator of the show, all I can say is that I want our Jewish fans to know that I see you and I hear you and I understand how you feel,” she said. “And the show has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism.”
She added that the programme was inspired by her own experience of becoming Jewish and being Jewish, describing positive representation of Jewish people as especially important to her.
“That is why I made this show,” Foster said. “It’s because of how beautiful of an experience I’ve had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person, and sitting here right now at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it’s so important to have that and that is what this show is intended to be and so I want people to know that.”
Foster said people were entitled to hold different views from her, adding: “I can just tell you what I created this show for, what the intention of the show is.”
