An extreme heat warning is in effect across the Phoenix metropolitan area and surrounding desert communities, with temperatures expected to reach between 105F and 109F (41C and 43C) on Thursday.
The National Weather Service warning covers Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Queen Creek, Avondale, Buckeye and other parts of Maricopa County, as well as areas including Gila Bend, the Tonopah Desert, the Gila River Valley and the Sonoran Desert National Monument.
The warning remains in place until 8pm MST on Thursday, September 10, with officials classifying conditions as a major heat risk. Exposure to the heat can increase the risk of cramps, exhaustion and potentially fatal heatstroke.
Residents have been advised to drink plenty of water, wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. People working outside should take regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
Maricopa County residents can call 211 for information about free cooling centres, transport and water. Anyone showing signs of heatstroke should be moved to a cool, shaded location and emergency services contacted on 911.
