All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 were killed when the private jet crashed into a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, officials said.
The aircraft came down near Cresthaven at about 12.50pm local time on Sunday, 1 November, after departing from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas. It was travelling to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the crash as a “horrific tragedy”. The aircraft plunged near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, where it caused a large crater and sent flames and thick black smoke into the air.
Dashcam footage shared with Storyful by Aki Kuusisto appears to show the moment the jet fell from the sky and struck the ground. The video contains disturbing images.
Officials said there were no immediate reports of anyone on the ground being killed or injured, although the impact occurred close to homes and a busy road.
Military Trail was closed in both directions between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. Hundreds of residents in a nearby mobile home community were expected to be relocated as the area was treated as a crime scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration said its information was preliminary. The FAA is supporting the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation into what caused the crash.
