Former Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson has backed Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott to develop into a top player amid reported interest from the Blues.
The 23-year-old England international has attracted attention after a strong period with Bournemouth, helping the club secure European football. Chelsea are understood to be among the sides monitoring his situation as speculation grows over whether the Cherries can keep him.
Glen Johnson’s view on Chelsea transfer target Alex Scott
Johnson believes Scott has shown enough to suggest he could be a significant talent, while warning against making a major investment before the midfielder has proved himself over a longer period.
“Yeah, when I’ve seen him play, he looks likely to be the real deal,” Johnson said.
He added: “Obviously, there’s still a lot of question marks. You know, we’ve seen loads and loads of players have a flash in the pan and then fall away, which I hope isn’t the case for him.
“But there’s definitely a lot more to prove and a lot more to show than saying, ‘he’s our man, go get him already’.”
Scott has also impressed since earning his first senior England caps and may have further scope to progress at club level. Bournemouth’s track record of developing players and selling them for significant profits could make his future a subject of continued interest.
Chelsea are reportedly considering Scott as a possible replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who left for Manchester City on the final day of the summer transfer window.
