Liverpool are increasingly likely to make Ronald Araujo’s loan move from Barcelona permanent if the defender maintains his impressive start at Anfield.
The Uruguay international joined Liverpool on a season-long loan during the summer, with the club holding an option to buy him for around €55 million (£46m-£47m).
Araujo, 27, has quickly adapted to English football and established himself as the first-choice right-back, despite his preferred position being at centre-back.
Liverpool weigh permanent transfer for Ronald Araujo
Marca reports that Liverpool are prepared to activate the purchase option should Araujo’s performances remain at their current level.
The club is understood to have planned a later assessment before making a final decision. Previous reporting from Football Insider indicated that Liverpool would be willing to complete a permanent transfer if the defender continued to impress.
Araujo has made 10 appearances for Liverpool and has provided a versatile option across the back line. His defensive strength, aerial ability and positional flexibility have helped him make an immediate impact.
Andoni Iraola has also praised the defender’s attitude and willingness to fulfil different roles. Speaking in September, the Liverpool head coach said: “I like his spirit. I’m very happy for him.”
The financial commitment remains the main consideration for Liverpool. A fee of close to £47m would represent a significant investment in a player approaching 28, while his wages would add to the overall cost of the deal.
However, Araujo’s form has reduced the risk involved. Liverpool already know that he can operate effectively within Iraola’s system and contribute in more than one defensive position.
If he sustains his current level, Liverpool may conclude that paying the agreed fee for a proven performer is preferable to spending a similar amount on an untested replacement.
