One person was killed and eight others injured in an Alabama football game shooting outside Legion Field in Birmingham after the annual Magic City Classic on Saturday.
Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had already left the stadium grounds when shots were fired near Graymont Avenue, where vendors had set up.
“This was a completely senseless act of violence,” Mr Pickett said, adding that he was “very grateful that more people weren’t injured”. He said the issue was one that communities across the US needed to address.
The circumstances of the shooting remained unclear. Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman said one person had been detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, while multiple weapons had been found and secured.
Nearly 70,000 people attended the game between historically Black universities Alabama State and Alabama A&M, which have been rivals for more than a century. Alabama A&M won 31-28.
The Magic City Classic is among the biggest-attended games in its college football division. Its long history prompted Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr, a former NFL linebacker and alumnus of the university, to propose creating a Hall of Fame for the fixture.
