A new study into adolescent loneliness shows how it fluctuates with social context and with underlying maladaptive personality traits. Researchers used ecological momentary assessment to track young people’s feelings in real time, involving 294 participants aged 12 to 21 over a 14‑day period with up to seven prompts a day and an additional evening survey, generating more than 27,000 momentary responses.
The researchers frame their work within the differential reactivity hypothesis, which suggests people differ in how they respond to social situations. Those prone to loneliness may not encounter more stressors, but they react more intensely to the ones they do experience, with personality traits shaping this reactivity.
Leading the project was Cara Luisa Wicher, a psychologist at the University of Wuppertal, along with Susanne Buecker, Paula Philippi and Aleksandra Kaurin.
Before the monitoring period, participants completed baseline questionnaires measuring trait loneliness and maladaptive personality domains, including negative affect, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition and rigid perfectionism.
Findings showed solitude matters for momentary loneliness. Being alone was associated with higher momentary and daily loneliness compared with being in the presence of others, though overall time spent alone over the two weeks did not always translate into higher average loneliness.
Who participants were with mattered. Close connections such as friends, romantic partners or family tended to lessen loneliness, whereas time with weaker ties like classmates or colleagues did not.
Context also shaped emotions, with loneliness peaking when interacting with people on the internet, followed by time spent with roommates or strangers.
As participants aged, their social patterns shifted: older adolescents spent less time with family and more with romantic partners, and they showed a stronger link between being alone and loneliness.
Maladaptive personality traits weighed heavily in daily experiences. Those scoring higher on these traits at the study’s outset reported greater and more variable loneliness, with sharper day‑to‑day emotional swings. Two domains stood out: detachment and negative affect.
Adolescents high in detachment spent more time alone and experienced more frequent spikes of loneliness, while those high in negative affect felt especially lonely when alone. The traits appeared to alter how youths processed their social environments.
On a broader level, the researchers found that maladaptive traits could disconnect loneliness from actual social contact. For youths with higher trait levels, increased time alone did not predict higher average loneliness, suggesting loneliness can be an ongoing state rather than a reaction to a moment of solitude.
Quality of social contact mattered more than quantity. Daily satisfaction with social interactions partly explained the link between being alone and feeling lonely, with those displaying maladaptive traits reporting lower social satisfaction overall, contributing to heightened isolation.
Limitations include reliance on self‑reports and a relatively uniform sample born in Germany from stable socioeconomic backgrounds, which may limit applicability to more diverse groups. The researchers also used a single question to gauge momentary loneliness to minimise participant burden, a choice that may miss the full nuance of isolation.
Because the study observed associations rather than experiments, it cannot establish causation. It remains unclear whether online time precedes loneliness or if lonely youths gravitate to the internet as a coping mechanism. The authors call for future research across more diverse populations and investigations into coping strategies or emotion regulation.
