Five people have been killed and around a dozen wounded in a shooting near Krakow’s main market square in southern Poland, police said.
A man opened fire at random people from a car driving through the city’s Main Square, according to Krakow police. Officers are among those injured.
The gunman was “neutralised” by police and taken to hospital, a police spokesperson said.
Krakow’s municipal government had earlier reported deaths and injuries after shots were fired in a square, but gave no further details.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as a “tragic shooting” on Saturday. He said: “I am being kept informed by the Minister of the Interior about the situation in Krakow,” adding that “the police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack”.
Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, is about 250 kilometres south of Warsaw. Police investigations into the circumstances of the shooting are continuing.
