Several people were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, federal law enforcement officials said. The suspect was also shot and killed.
Bend Police communications manager Sheila Miller said at least two people had been taken to St Charles Medical Centre and that the victims included children. It was not immediately clear whether those taken to hospital were among those killed.
Police received a report of a shot fired into a car shortly before 1pm local time, Ms Miller said. Officers arrived within three minutes and were quickly told that the shooter was dead.
Ms Miller said it was unclear who had shot the suspect, adding that it “may have been a bystander”. No further information about the suspect was released.
The total number of victims remained unclear. FBI director Kash Patel said the agency’s local office was at the scene assisting police, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also helping local authorities, including Oregon State Police.
Bend is in central Oregon, about 150 miles south-east of Portland.
