Texas Longhorns assistant coach Johnny Nansen has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after a three-car crash in Austin, Texas.
Austin police said officers were called to the collision in the 700 block of South Capital of Texas Highway at about 8.55pm on Wednesday, September 16.
Nansen, 52, was identified as the driver of one of the vehicles. Officers said he displayed signs consistent with possible impairment and showed multiple clues of impairment during standard field sobriety tests.
He was subsequently arrested on a misdemeanour DWI charge. There was no immediate indication of whether he had provided a breath or blood sample, and police did not say who was responsible for the crash.
Nansen is Texas’s co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, a position he has held since joining head coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff in 2024.
Sarkisian confirmed the arrest at a news conference on Thursday and said Nansen had not attended practice ahead of Saturday’s home game against UTSA. The coach said Nansen’s status for the game had not yet been decided.
“We’re obviously disappointed, but that’s all I really have on it at this time,” Sarkisian said, adding that he was still gathering information about the incident.
Texas lists Will Muschamp as its defensive coordinator, while Nansen remains in his role as co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
