Donald Trump joked about Melania Trump’s absence during remarks at the US ambassador’s residence in Ireland, telling listeners that the First Lady was “there in spirit”.
The president spoke on Saturday afternoon after landing in Dublin. He said Melania was “very friendly” with the ambassador and had been invited to join the trip.
But, according to Mr Trump, she replied: “Well, it’s a seven-hour trip. Maybe I’m not that friendly.”
The comment drew applause from those attending. Mr Trump then said he had urged her: “Put on a Make America Great Again hat and come on, let’s go.”
