President Donald Trump has announced plans to create an “AI Force” to monitor the development and use of artificial intelligence, saying he will appoint an AI “Czar” in the near future.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said the initiative would be modelled on the Space Force, which he described as a major success during his first term.
He said the new body would not restrict the technology industry, writing: “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!”
However, Mr Trump added that he would monitor what he called “BAD” instances of artificial intelligence acting improperly.
The announcement comes amid growing concern over the potential risks posed by the technology. The source material says the US military reportedly came close to starting a war with China after relying on a faulty intelligence report generated by AI.
OpenAI has also reportedly identified six new incidents it described as “unexpected or concerning”, adding to recent unease over the technology’s capabilities.
Mr Trump’s proposed AI Force is intended to oversee the sector while supporting its continued growth. He did not provide further details about its structure or when it would be established.
