Two people were killed in a three-vehicle crash on the I-10 East Freeway near Channelview, Texas, on Tuesday.
The collision happened on the eastbound carriageway at Monmouth Street, just west of Lynchburg and near the San Jacinto River. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said emergency crews were sent to the 17,400 block of the motorway shortly after midday.
Investigators said a red Ford Explorer struck the rear of a white Jeep Wrangler as both vehicles travelled east. The Jeep’s driver managed to keep control and bring the vehicle to a stop, while the Explorer continued along the road.
The Explorer then hit a barrier, overturned and travelled down an embankment. It caught fire, and a man and a woman inside the vehicle died at the scene. Authorities said both had been wearing seatbelts.
The driver of the Jeep, who was the only person in that vehicle, was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
All eastbound lanes were closed while first responders worked at the scene, with drivers advised to seek alternative routes. The identities of those killed have not been released and the circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
