Two 16-year-old boys have died and two others were injured after a BMW crashed into trees and caught fire in Bullsbrook, in Perth’s north-east.
The grey BMW 3 Series was travelling north along Railway Pde at about 10.20pm when it left the road, struck several trees and rolled, police said. It came to rest on its roof before the vehicle and surrounding brush caught fire.
The driver and a front-seat passenger, both aged 16, died at the scene. Two 17-year-old boys travelling in the back survived and were taken to Royal Perth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the car had been reported stolen earlier that night, but said that did not lessen the tragedy.
“In no way does that lessen the tragedy that’s occurred here,” Mr Blanch said. “This breaks all of our hearts to know that two 16-year-old boys have died from a car accident.”
He said the severity of the crash was evident from the condition of the BMW and the fire that followed.
“It’s amazing that anyone walked away from that crash and we know that the crash also involved a fire that started in the brush where it crashed, so it could have been even worse,” Mr Blanch said.
Mr Blanch said speed was almost certainly a factor, although police have not said whether the surviving passengers will face charges.
Major Crash investigators are examining the scene as they work to establish what happened before the BMW left the road. Police have appealed for witnesses, and anyone with dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage connected to the crash, to contact Crime Stoppers.
