A Warm Springs police officer was killed in Georgia late on Tuesday, 1 September, prompting a Blue Alert and a large manhunt for a 23-year-old man described as armed and dangerous.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the officer as Chris Fisher of the Warm Springs Police Department. It said he died at 11.57pm in Warm Springs, in Meriwether County, about 70 miles south of Atlanta.
Jimmie Steverson is wanted in connection with the death. Investigators said he was last seen in the area at the time of the shooting and may have been travelling in a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado.

Steverson is described as 5ft 6in tall and weighing about 150lb, with brown eyes and black locs. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and black gym shorts, according to the GBI.
Authorities have warned members of the public not to approach him. Anyone who sees Steverson or notices suspicious activity has been urged to call 911 immediately.
The investigation was centred on the Meriwether Country Inn on Spring Street, where a substantial police presence remained on Wednesday morning. Local reports said dozens of deputies, officers and GBI agents had gathered around the 40-room motel, along with fire crews and multiple patrol vehicles.
Officials have not confirmed that the officer was killed at the inn. The GBI’s statement confirmed Fisher’s death in Warm Springs but did not disclose the precise location of the shooting.
The Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office was initially investigating a fatal shooting at the motel before the officer’s identity was released. The inquiry remains active.
Information about Steverson’s whereabouts can be passed to the GBI tip line on 1-800-597-TIPS (8477). Georgia governor Brian Kemp said he and his family were “deeply saddened” by Fisher’s death and asked residents to remember the officer’s family and colleagues.
