Western Australia’s housing completions fell further behind its National Housing Accord target after 4,814 homes were completed in the June quarter, new Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows.
The figure was 6.3 per cent lower than in the previous quarter and down 12.9 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
Total dwelling completions in Western Australia also fell below 20,000 in the last financial year, prompting criticism from opposition housing spokeswoman Sandra Brewer.
Brewer described the result as “appalling” amid the housing crisis, saying the state was building far fewer homes despite having a larger population and growing demand.
“A decade ago, WA was completed more than 32,000 homes in a year. Today, despite a much larger population and enormous demand, we are nowhere near that level,” she said.
