Will Estes has discussed his return to Boston Blue as Jamie Reagan, while suggesting he would be willing to reprise the role again and explore a potential spin-off with his on-screen wife, Vanessa Ray.
The 48-year-old actor appeared alongside former co-star Donnie Wahlberg in Friday’s episode of the Blue Bloods spin-off. Estes said stepping back into the character was more daunting than he had expected after spending time away from acting.
“Because I hadn’t done it and I knew I was out of shape for acting for a little bit,” he told TV Insider. “I don’t know where that muscle’s located inside your brain or your body or both, but yeah, I was like, ‘Oh, I got to do this,’ because they wrote real stuff for us, so I had to be ready.”
He added: “I was fine as soon as we shot the first scene, but it was rough for me getting there.”
Estes said the script ultimately persuaded him to return to the character. The episode allowed Jamie and his brother to address tensions that had been present between them, giving the actor an opportunity to revisit their relationship.
“I thought I was done with the character. I had sort of set it down and said, ‘Okay, we told the story,’” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Then I read the script and I thought, ‘What a cool piece.’”
“There was always this conflict between the brothers, and in this episode, there’s a lot of resolution, and there’s a lot of moving through that and sort of facing it head-on,” he said. “That was a big part of why I really wanted to do it.”
Will Estes on a possible Jamie and Eddie spin-off
Speaking to Us Weekly, Estes said he would be “100%” willing to return to Boston Blue, including alongside Ray. However, he said he was not involved in discussions about future storylines.
“They don’t let me in the writers’ rooms, so I don’t — I’m never a part of those conversations,” he said.
Asked about the possibility of a spin-off centred on Jamie and Eddie, Estes replied: “What do I say that promotes the idea?”
He added: “We have talked about it, but not in a capacity that I can give you an air date on. So, no at this time.”
