Four people have been injured in a drive-by shooting outside a boxing event south of Brisbane, with a 19-year-old woman believed to be an innocent bystander in a critical condition.
Queensland police said shots were fired near Fitzy’s Loganholme on Bryants Road at about 8.15pm on Saturday. The venue was hosting the Logan City Titles boxing event at the time.
The woman, from Jimboomba, suffered gunshot wounds to her head and neck and remained critically ill at Princess Alexandra Hospital on Sunday.
Three men were also injured. A 38-year-old from Browns Plains, a 37-year-old from Salisbury and a 27-year-old from Cornubia were each shot in the abdomen and were in stable conditions.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said a Mitsubishi had approached the drop-off area near those who were wounded before shots were fired from its front passenger window.
Witnesses and CCTV footage showed two men wearing balaclavas and gloves inside the vehicle, police said. Investigators are searching for the pair and at least one other person who is believed to have collected them after the Mitsubishi was set alight.
The vehicle was found burnt out on Maloney Road at Waterford West. A dual-cab ute was also set alight on Beaudesert Road at Tamborine, and police are investigating whether it was connected to the shooting.
Detective Inspector Galpin said police had so far had limited contact with the victims and were examining whether the 19-year-old had been targeted.
“I don’t believe the young lady was an intended victim of this,” he said. “I believe she is an innocent bystander. Investigations are ongoing into that very question.”
Taskforce Maxima, Queensland’s police unit focused on outlaw motorcycle gangs, is involved in the investigation. Police said the event organisers had given no indication that violence was expected before at least six shots were fired.
Detective Inspector Galpin said the presence of families and children meant the consequences could have been even more serious. He described the woman’s condition as “horrific” for her family.
Logan mayor Jon Raven said the community had been shaken, describing the people responsible as cowards. He said police had advised that there was no further threat, while urging residents to trust their assessment.
“These individuals do not represent the people of Logan, and they do not represent what we’re about,” Mr Raven said.
The event organiser, Logan City Titles, said it was “heartbroken” by what had happened and was praying for the victims’ recovery.
Queensland premier David Crisafulli said police were doing everything in their power to arrest those responsible, describing it as unacceptable that people attending a pub event could be caught in gunfire.
“This isn’t the Queensland we want to see,” he said, adding that new laws targeting drive-by shootings had been passed earlier this year and should apply if those responsible were arrested.
