A 70-year-old man has died after being struck by a reversing rubbish truck during his morning walk in Queens Park, Perth.
An Yu was hit by a white Volvo truck on Balaka Way at about 8.50am on Monday, 7 September. He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, Western Australia Police said.
Mr Yu’s wife is understood to have discovered him lying injured on the road, only metres from their home, as she was travelling to an English class. According to 7NEWS, the couple were able to exchange final words before he was taken to hospital.
A family friend told the broadcaster that Mr Yu was found bleeding on the ground. His two daughters, who live overseas, were travelling to Perth following his death.
Police said the 59-year-old truck driver was not injured. Officers from the Major Crash Investigation Section are examining the scene and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to come forward. City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the truck was fitted with reverse sensors and cameras, adding: “We have all the laser equipment you’d expect on these trucks.”
The City of Canning said it was deeply saddened by the death, described the vehicle as a City recycling truck and said it was supporting the staff member involved. A nearby resident described Mr Yu as a “sweet man” who would “always wave” when she saw him. She said he had also helped to look after her cats.
