Safeway is to close its West San Jose supermarket next month, ending 57 years of trading at the Bollinger Road site.
The store at 6150 Bollinger Road is expected to shut on or around November 13, the company has confirmed. Safeway’s own store listing now describes the closure as permanent.
The supermarket is located in the Orchard Farms Shopping Center, close to the Cupertino border. Its closure will reduce the number of Safeway stores in San Jose to 13.
Safeway has not given a reason for the decision, saying only that it was “not made lightly”. The company said it was proud to have served residents in the area over the years.
Employees have been told about the closure in advance and are expected to retain their jobs. Safeway said staff would be assigned to other stores in the area in line with collective bargaining agreements.
Nearby Safeway stores
Customers have been directed to other branches, including the supermarket at 5146 Stevens Creek Boulevard, which is a short distance away. Safeway also lists stores in nearby Saratoga and Cupertino.
The closure follows a series of Safeway shutdowns elsewhere in the Bay Area. Stores in Hayward, Pinole, Vallejo and San Francisco have also closed or are no longer trading in recent years.
In San Francisco, the closure of the Fillmore neighbourhood store was delayed amid concerns about the effect on older and low-income residents who relied on it for groceries. The Webster Street branch eventually closed in February 2025 after more than four decades.
