An Australian Army soldier has died during a training exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area in the Northern Territory, while five other people were injured.
The Australian Defence Force said the incident happened on Monday afternoon. Emergency services were sent to the site after reports of a vehicle accident.
“Next of kin has been notified,” the Defence Force said.
Mount Bundey is a 117,300-hectare military facility about 134 kilometres from Darwin. It is used by the Australian Army and allied forces for live-fire training.
The circumstances surrounding the latest death have not been disclosed.
The training area has previously been the scene of a fatal incident. Army private Jason Challis was killed there in 2017 during an urban attack simulation in a mock village.
A Northern Territory coroner later found that the Victorian soldier had been shot while standing behind a plywood wall. The inquiry described the exercise as “shambolic” and identified a “long-held mindset” against rehearsing combat-style operations.
The Department of Defence subsequently pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court to breaching a health and safety duty.
