Tennessee prison chief Frank Strada has resigned after the botched execution of Christa Pike, who remains unconscious on a ventilator following the failed lethal injection. Governor Bill Lee announced that Mr Strada, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, would leave his post later this month. An interim commissioner will be appointed. The resignation came after medical staff struggled to administer two doses of pentobarbital to Ms Pike, 50, during Wednesday’s execution. Her lawyers said she was injected with at least seven needles and was heard crying, whimpering and breathing heavily throughout the procedure. A court filing stated that Ms…

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced the resignation on Saturday and said he was “grateful for his commitment” to ensuring a smooth transition. Mr Lee added: “I appreciate his willingness to put the interests of Tennesseans first during this difficult moment.” The resignation follows two lethal injections during Pike’s…

Tuchel made clear that his selection represents an important opening for the 27-year-old. Asked whether it was a “now or never” situation, Tuchel replied: “Good question. Maybe, maybe a little bit. You always have the chance, I would say.” He added: “Once you are in…

Perth Zoo is to build a black cockatoo hospital at its South Perth site as Western Australia prepares for the potential impact of H5 bird flu on native wildlife. The zoo last week awarded a $450,000 contract to Instant Transportables to supply and install four transportable buildings. The units will form a triage and care facility for black cockatoos, although the tender does not cover the cost of fitting them out. The total project is expected to cost at least half a million dollars. “While we do not yet know what impact avian influenza may have on black cockatoos, nor…
Tennessee’s prison chief is to resign following the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike, Governor Bill Lee has announced. Frank Strada, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, said he believed stepping down was “in the best interests” of the state as an independent review into the botched execution gets under way. “I look forward to doing everything I can to help determine exactly what occurred,” Mr Strada said, describing the inquiry as “entirely appropriate and necessary”. Pike was due to be executed by lethal injection on Wednesday, but the procedure failed twice. Her lawyers said she was…
Nigel Farage’s concerns about his personal security were not always believed or acted upon, Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice has said, after a man accused of murdering Ann Widdecombe was charged with preparing terrorist acts allegedly involving the party leader. Michael Owen has praised Liverpool’s decision to allow Curtis Jones to join Inter Milan, despite some supporters believing the transfer could prove costly. Jones had become a popular and useful squad player at Anfield, but his departure has opened the way for other academy prospects to compete for opportunities. No direct replacement was signed at the time. Michael Owen backs Liverpool’s faith in youngsters Owen believes Liverpool should avoid signing squad players simply to fill the gap and instead give their emerging talent a chance to develop. “I think there are a couple of good youngsters and it is not…
