An Omani co-pilot accused of attacking the captain of an Israel-bound FlyDubai flight with a cockpit axe and attempting to seize control had previously been barred from flying for Oman Air over concerns about alleged extremist views, officials said. The co-pilot was identified as Hamam al-Hammami by three people familiar with the matter, including a Gulf diplomat and a Western diplomat. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to discuss the investigation publicly. The United Arab Emirates, which is leading the inquiry, has described Wednesday’s incident as a “terrorist attack”. The aircraft, carrying 182 people, entered a dangerous descent…

An Andy Burnham sign language interpreter caught BBC viewers’ attention after appearing to bear an uncanny resemblance to the Prime Minister during a BBC News interview. Matthew Banks was interpreting as Mr Burnham spoke to the BBC’s political editor, Chris Mason. His short black hair, thick-rimmed glasses and dark eyebrows closely matched the politician’s appearance. Mr Banks was also dressed in a similar black suit, white shirt and tie, prompting viewers to joke that the BBC had found a “stunt double” for the Prime Minister. “Impressive work from BBC News finding Andy Burnham’s sign-language stunt double,” one user wrote on…
Florida homeowners associations are leaving some Black and Latino residents feeling excluded from their own communities while rising property prices make moving increasingly difficult, according to interviews with residents in central Florida. Sociologist Stephanie A. Dhuman interviewed 47 Latino, Caribbean and Black residents between 2017 and 2020 to examine their experiences of living under homeowners associations, commonly known as HOAs. Several residents said they believed HOA officials were sending a clear message that they did not belong, but that they could not afford to leave. Nearly half of Florida residents live in HOA-governed communities, the highest proportion of any US…
Manchester United Women beat Liverpool Women 1-0 in Leigh to continue their revival under new manager Eva Olid, with Julia Zigiotti’s early chip settling a closely fought contest. United have now taken seven points from their last three games after a difficult start to Olid’s reign, which began with two defeats before a 5-0 loss to Chelsea. The victory also moved them level on points with Liverpool and secured back-to-back wins for the first time since February. Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating’s poor clearance presented Zigiotti with the opportunity inside six minutes. The United forward took advantage from just outside the…
